MICRO TRENCHING: SMALL TRENCHES, BIG IMPACT

At AFT Trenchers, we’ve seen first-hand how even the smallest cuts can make a massive difference, especially when it comes to micro trenching. While it might sound like a scaled-down version of standard trenching (and in many ways it is), micro trenching is a precise, efficient, and increasingly popular solution for modern infrastructure needs. It’s fast, tidy, and causes far less disruption – what’s not to like?

WHAT IS MICRO TRENCHING?

Micro trenching is exactly what it says on the tin: creating extremely narrow, shallow trenches, often no wider than 50 mm. It’s typically used for laying cabling and in urban environments where traditional trenching would be too disruptive or impractical. Think busy streets, city pavements, or areas with dense underground utilities.

The main application? Laying fibre optic cables. As the demand for faster broadband and smarter cities increases, so too does the need for a trenching method that’s quick, neat, and keeps traffic and footpaths moving.

WHEN AND WHY MICRO TRENCHING IS USED

Micro trenching is ideal for:

  • Broadband or fibre network installations
  • Connecting smart city infrastructure (CCTV, EV charging, sensors)
  • Fast-track projects where speed and surface restoration are crucial

Because the trenches are so narrow and shallow, the amount of debris removed is minimal. That means quicker clean-up and reinstatement. Roads can often be re-opened the same day, a huge benefit in busy city environments.

At AFT Trenchers, we understand the pressure contractors face to deliver quickly and cleanly. Our micro trenching solutions are designed with that in mind – compact, precise, and built to tackle even the most challenging surfaces.

MICRO TRENCHING FOR FIBRE OPTIC CABLING

Fibre optic cabling is the backbone of modern connectivity, enabling everything from lightning-fast internet to interconnected smart systems. Micro trenching has become the go-to method for fibre installations, particularly in built-up or access-sensitive areas where minimising surface disruption is critical.

AFT Trenchers provides purpose-built machinery that cuts clean, accurate micro trenches which is ideal for housing fibre optic cables. These machines ensure the cable is laid securely at the correct depth while maintaining a smooth trench for fast reinstatement. Our equipment is trusted by contractors across the UK and beyond to deliver fibre projects on time and with minimal inconvenience to local communities.

Whether you’re expanding a rural broadband network or connecting a dense urban zone, AFT’s trenchers deliver speed, accuracy, and reliability every time.

WHAT MAKES AFT’S MICRO TRENCHING EQUIPMENT STAND OUT?

With decades of experience in the trenching industry, AFT Trenchers has fine-tuned its equipment to meet the exacting needs of micro trenching. Our machines are engineered for tight tolerances and offer:

Clean, accurate cuts – Perfect for narrow spaces with little margin for error

Speed and efficiency – Cut and install fibre faster than traditional methods

Minimal disruption – Keep streets, paths, and businesses moving

Easy reinstatement – Clean trenches mean better backfilling and quicker surface restoration

Whether you’re upgrading a broadband network or rolling out new smart tech, AFT’s trenchers will help you get the job done right – first time, every time.

MH100 – Excavator Mounted Trencher

The MH100 is a versatile trencher mounted onto the arm of an excavator using an adjustable 360° turntable. Its design allows for trenching in challenging locations such as canals, embankments, and over barriers. With a maximum trench depth of 1.8 meters and widths ranging from 125mm to 400mm, it’s ideal for heavy-duty applications where flexibility is paramount.

HW60 – Skid Steer Loader Mounted Trencher

Designed for urban environments, the HW60 is a hydraulic wheel trencher mounted onto skid steer loaders. It’s particularly effective for clean, quick, and reliable trenching in roads and other hard surfaces. This makes it an excellent choice for micro trenching, especially when installing fibre optic cables in densely populated areas.

AFT100 – Tractor Mounted Trencher

The AFT100 is a robust, PTO-driven chain trencher suitable for tractors with 100+ HP. Equipped with a heavy-duty chain and bullet teeth, it can dig through challenging ground conditions, including up to 200mm of concrete. With digging depths up to 1.8 meters and widths up to 400mm, it’s perfect for installing fibre optic cables and water pipes in tough terrains.

Wizz Wheel 75 – Tractor Mounted Trencher

The Wizz Wheel 75 is a powerful, PTO-driven wheel trencher designed for tractors ranging from 90 to 140 HP. Fitted with a digging wheel and bullet teeth, it can achieve trench depths up to 0.75 meters and widths between 7550mm and 150mm. Its capability to cut narrow trenches swiftly makes it highly suitable for long-distance fibre optic network installations and micro trenching projects.

AFT45 – Compact Tractor Mounted Trencher

Ideal for smaller projects, the AFT45 is mounted on hydrostatic tractors of 30+ HP. It can be equipped with soil blades or carbide teeth, allowing for trench depths up to 1.2 meters and widths up to 200mm.
